Kandy's central location is ideal as a stop-over for tours that take visitors to different parts of the country. The ancient city and its surroundings also have a number of historic landmarks and places of interest, stemming from the country's rich history and ancient kingdom. In the town itself, notable locations include the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy Lake, Bahirawakanda Buddha statue, and the Udawattakele forest reserve. In the outskirts, ancient temples such as Embekke, Lankathilaka and Gadaladeniya, provide a look into the architecture of the past, as well as religious practices that are still in place today.
Known as the Hill Capital, Kandy, which is approximately 100 km from Colombo, is also popular for the annual Esala Perahera, a Buddhist cultural pageant that parades through the streets for 10 days.

The cool climate that envelopes Kandy, almost year-round, attracts those from across the country and the globe. With warm days to cool, breezy evenings, the hill capital is generally cooler than most areas of Sri Lanka, with the warmest temperatures experienced in the months of March, April and May.
